Introduction
Absa Corporate and Investment Banking has launched regulated crypto custody in South Africa using Ripple’s custody technology.
The Absa crypto custody service gives institutional clients a regulated environment in which to safeguard digital assets and manage private keys through a major African bank. The platform applies established financial-industry standards around governance, approvals, compliance and recoverability.
The launch comes as digital-asset activity across Sub-Saharan Africa continues to grow. The region received more than $205 billion in onchain crypto value between July 2024 and June 2025, according to Chainalysis. This represented an increase of approximately 52% from the previous year.
Absa Crypto Custody Brings Institutional Controls Into Banking
Absa describes its Digital Asset Custody platform as a secure and regulated environment for institutional digital assets.
The service is not positioned as a conventional crypto wallet. Instead, Absa says the system applies controls commonly used within established financial institutions.
Its custody architecture protects keys and transaction authorisations inside secure hardware environments. The platform uses deterministic key derivation rather than permanently storing static private keys. It also includes recoverability mechanisms and institutional approval controls.
These features address practical operational questions that businesses face when managing digital assets. Companies must establish who controls their assets, how access is authorised and what procedures apply if a private key is lost or compromised.
Robyn Lawson, Absa’s Head of Digital Product for Custody, has explained that institutional adoption is moving the discussion beyond the question of who holds the keys. The focus is increasingly on how those keys are governed.
This places governance, internal approvals, compliance, security and recoverability at the centre of institutional digital-asset custody.
The regional market provides important context for the service. Sub-Saharan Africa’s more than $205 billion in onchain value was recorded over the 12 months between July 2024 and June 2025. The approximately 52% year-on-year increase indicates growing digital-asset activity across the region.
Ripple Expands Its Institutional Custody Presence in Africa
Ripple first announced its custody partnership with Absa in October 2025, making the bank its first major custody partner in Africa.
The partnership forms part of Ripple’s continued development across custody, payments, RLUSD and tokenisation. It also shows that the company’s activities extend beyond its association with XRP payments.
Under the partnership, Absa uses Ripple’s custody technology to provide institutional clients with infrastructure for safeguarding digital assets and managing private keys. The service combines Ripple’s technology with Absa’s regulated banking environment.
For institutional clients, the practical focus is on maintaining control over access and authorisation while providing procedures for recovery. These requirements become increasingly important when digital assets are managed within corporate governance, compliance and risk-management structures.
The launch brings digital-asset custody into Absa’s institutional banking services in South Africa. It also gives Ripple an institutional custody implementation through a major African bank.
As Sub-Saharan Africa’s onchain activity grows, the Absa crypto custody service provides institutional clients with a regulated option built around governance, approvals, compliance, key management and recoverability.
